History

Board of Directors

Legal Aid for Washington Fund (LAW Fund) was created in 1991 by three leaders in the Washington State Bar Association; the late Jack Dean of Spokane, Mark Hutcheson of Seattle and Paul Stritmatter of Hoquiam.

We are indebted to the vision and commitment of these and all LAW Fund Board Members to making equal justice a reality in our state. Raising charitable support to bridge the alarming gap between those who can afford legal representation and those who cannot, LAW Fund has been able to contribute over $15 million to support civil legal aid programs in Washington State since its inception.

In 2004, LAW Fund completed an administrative merger with the Legal Foundation of Washington (The Legal Foundation). The Legal Foundation administers the Interest on Lawyers/ Limited Practice Officers Trust Account (“IOLTA”) distributions to grantees across Washington (to learn more about LFW, go to www.legalfoundation.org ).

The result of the merge means contributions to LAW Fund & the Campaign for Equal Justice will support many more legal aid programs than in the past that include staffed, specialty and volunteer attorney programs throughout the state (click on Benefiting Agencies to see a list of organizations your contribution will benefit). Secondly, by pooling resources, we've created money-saving efficiencies that make funding for statewide legal aid services and go further. Simply put, the merger allows more of your support to be directed to what counts the most: the provision of civil legal aid to people who are facing some of the most difficult of life's circumstances.

LAW Fund is housed together in downtown Seattle with the Legal Foundation and the Equal Justice Coalition (EJC), a non-partisan educational outreach effort comprised of a broad-based coalition of community leaders from all across the state. Learn more about the EJC's work at: www.ejc.org
